About Sussex Petanque Association
Sussex Petanque Association (SXP) is one of 16 regional associations that make up Petanque England, the governing body for our sport. There are currently 7 clubs registered to Petanque England within the Sussex region. Whilst members of the Sussex Petanque Association must also be members of Petanque England (see details below), they may be "independent" players and do not have to be a member of a Registered club.
There are many opportunities to play petanque within Sussex and the best way to enjoy regular practice sessions and competitive games is to join one of our clubs. Each Club has a home venue and most participate in local leagues or have regular club days where members can play in organised, friendly games and intra-club competitions. Please contact one of your local clubs to find out more about the facilities and playing opportunities they offer, and arrange to come and try out the sport. Contact details for each registered club can be found here.
The Sussex Petanque region was formed in 2007 largely from existing clubs from 2 other regions within the old English Petanque Association, fore runner of Petanque England. Before that date the clubs in East Sussex were mainly affiliated to the Kent Region and clubs in West Sussex were mainly affiliated to the Southern Region.
In its formative years, the Sussex Petanque Association was focused on organising qualifying competitions to provide teams which represented the region at the Inter-Regional Championships. In addition to the Petanque England Inter-Regional qualifying competitions, the Sussex Petanque Association now hosts annual titles events for its members in the form of triples, doubles, mixed doubles, over 50's doubles, singles and shooting. The winners and runners-up of these events are invited to represent the region at national Petanque England Champion of Champions events each year. In fact in 2016 our regions over 50's winners and runners-up both made it through to the Over 50's Champion to Champions final, with Tony Mann and Jeff Mitchell winning the national over 50's title.
How to become a SXP / Petanque England member
If you want to become a SXP member and play in our regional titles events or inter-regional qualifying competitions, some of our local leagues and even national or inter-national competitions then you will need a Petanque England Licence. The annual subscription for adult membership to the Sussex Petanque Association (which includes membership of Petanque England and a license) currently costs just £28 for adults and £5 for juniors.
In addition to allowing you to play in competitions, your Petanque England license also gives you access to the resources of the national association and you are covered under Petanque England insurance when playing in any competitions. Visit the Petanque England Petanque England website for general information on membership and insurance.
Please contact the Sussex Regional Membership Secretary, Paul Smeeth, for further information or help with membership applications.
