Sussex Petanque Regional Qualifiers were completed today at Brighton & Hove PC’s Peace Statue Terrain right on the seafront on a glorious summer’s day.
Unfortunately 1 of the original 15 teams couldn’t make it to Brighton so we had 14 teams in total participating.
The top in-form team KMR (Matt Shrimpton, Kris Smith & Rob Willison) completed their 3 morning games dropping only 4 points during the course and eventually won for the third time in succession. The Goldsmiths team (Jeff Mitchell, Peter May & Alan Smith) also had a great morning winning all their games and qualifying for the Main Knockout for the first time in this series eventually finishing second on the day.
With something for everyone still to play for there was lots of calculations taking place throughout the day by teams and players trying their hardest to ascertain where they might end up in the final table.
Thanks go out in particular to Terry Gibbons of BHPC for getting the terrains ready to play and for looking after everyone throughout the day and also to Pat Connolly of the club. Thanks also to Alan Constable for assisting me with the organisation and paperwork and to Dawn Constable for sorting out accommodation and kit payments.
Once again Steven Slade and our Juniors organised another great raffle. The monies raised will be confirmed by Lindsey (our Treasurer) in due course.
The FINAL standings after Round 3 can be found on the attached file and show the 8 teams that will represent us in the Inter-Regional Championships and the 4 teams that will represent us in the Challenge Tournament.
Special mention to some players participating in their first year of our Regional Qualifiers. Brian & Lynn Chegwidden together with Adam Barclay impressively finished as our 2nd seeded team. Gareth & Gaynor Fleming and Mel Dooner together with Madelin Mills finished as our 10th seeded team. Not a bad result at all for this new bunch!!
Sadly 2 teams had to miss out and despite a gallant effort Mim’s Minions and Prats in Hats narrowly failed to make the cut but will remain as our reserve teams.
